CAN BE seminar helps entrepreneurs, new business owners October 9, 2007
HAZLETON – Dozens of area entrepreneurs and new business owners learned about a simple yet powerful set of tools that, when implemented, can increase their likelihood of success. The information was presented at a fee seminar held Tuesday evening by the Community Association for New Business Entrepreneurship, or CAN BE - Greater Hazleton’s business incubator program. The “Why Small Businesses Succeed” seminar focused on the concept of the “3 P’s - Passion, Planning and Persistence” and how incorporating these principles in a new business can drastically improve the likelihood of its success. The seminar was the latest in CAN BE’s ongoing “Start Your Own Business” seminar series. CAN BE Executive Director Jack St. Pierre and Rob McAnally, president of R. McAnally & Assoc., a global strategic consulting firm located in Mountain Top, were the featured speakers at the event. Both speakers gave in depth explanations of what exactly is meant by “passion, planning and persistence;” how to build each of the principles within individuals and a company; and practical examples of how to incorporate the concept into a business. “The `3 P’s’ play a critical role in the success of any new business,” St. Pierre said. “I’ve seen great business ideas fail because the people in charge lacked some or all of these traits. But, I’ve also seen people turn businesses that seemed doomed around by introducing passion, planning and persistence into the company culture.” McAnally echoed St. Pierre’s comments. “Not to oversimplify it, but if you want to succeed, you have to love what you are doing; have a strong idea of how to make it work; and have the mettle to not give up when things don’t go your way. Whether you’re designing software or building houses, those three traits have to be present to be a success.” Both St. Pierre and McAnally speak from experience, having launched successful businesses in the area. St. Pierre founded a plastics manufacturing business in the Valmont Industrial Park in 1986 that would eventually be bought by Pretium Packaging. McAnally’s consulting firm works with small businesses and Fortune 50 multinationals alike, specializing in services optimization, planning and program management. The “Why Small Businesses Succeed” seminar was sponsored in part by PPL and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania. CAN BE is a nonprofit, wholly owned subsidiary of CAN DO, Inc., Greater Hazleton’s economic development corporation. CAN BE operates the area’s business incubator, the Greater Hazleton Business Innovation Center in the Valmont Industrial Park in West Hazleton. The incubator program helps local entrepreneurs turn their ideas into ventures that will become successful firms able to function on their own and establishing new business and industry for the area. Companies that “graduate” from an incubator program have the potential to create new jobs, commercialize new technologies and strengthen the local economy. The National Business Incubation Association has reported that four out of five new businesses fail within the first five years. However, four out of five new businesses started in a business incubator succeed within that same amount of time. CAN BE is funded in part by grants from Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania and PPL Electric Utilities. Penn State Hazleton is an educational partner. If you have an idea for a new business, but were unable to attend seminar, contact CAN BE at 570-455-8334 or visit them online at www.canbe.biz. for more information or to find out how you can get your new business started. |
