Public Invited to Open House at CAN BE Business Incubator Sep. 25, 2006
CAN BE, the Community Association for New Business Entrepreneurship, is hosting an open house event to help area residents learn how to develop a successful new business. The open house will take place on Wednesday, October 4, from 5-7 p.m. at CAN BE’s business incubator, the Greater Hazleton’s Business Innovation Center, located at 103 Rotary Drive in the Valmont Industrial Park. Refreshments will be served. Area residents with a new business idea, as well as those curious about the incubator program, are welcome to attend this free event. Everyone in attendance will be able to tour the business incubator and gather important information on how to start their own business. Local business experts will also be available to offer mentoring information to entrepreneurs. CAN BE is a wholly owned subsidiary of CAN DO. The organization operates a true business incubator in the Innovation Center where start-up businesses enjoy benefits such as management guidance; affordable rental space and flexible leases; shared basic business services and equipment; technology support services; and assistance in obtaining the financing necessary to grow their business. Professional mentors in the community are also available to incubator clients on a consulting basis for all phases of business operation. “There are many issues to take into consideration when starting your own business,” said CAN BE Executive Director Jack St. Pierre. “This free event will help people from throughout the area get answers and information from other successful entrepreneurs and local business experts about how to start a successful new business.” “Entrepreneurs stand a significantly better chance of starting a successful business if they do so in a business incubator,” said CAN BE Chairman and Chancellor of Penn State Hazleton Dr. John Madden. “National statistics show that, on average, four out of five new businesses fail within the first five years. When started in an incubator however, four out of five businesses succeed in the same period of time.” CAN BE was created in 2005 to help local entrepreneurs turn their ideas into ventures that will become successful firms able to function on their own and establishing new business and industry for the area. Companies that “graduate” from an incubator program have the potential to create new jobs, commercialize new technologies and strengthen the local economy. The incubator has Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) status. KIZs create “knowledge neighborhoods” close to colleges, universities and research institutions that focus talent and resources in clusters, transforming communities into technology and business incubators. Entrepreneurs can find an unbroken chain of ready resources, including research and peer groups, entrepreneurial support, venture capital, and workforce and financial assistance. Parties interested in attending the open house, or with questions about starting their own business, should call CAN BE at 455-8334.
