CAN BE to hold free seminar for area entrepreneurs September 24, 2007 HAZLETON – The Community Association for New Business Entrepreneurship, or CAN BE, is hosting a free seminar on Tues., Oct. 9, to help new business owners and those interested in launching a new business get their ideas off the drawing board and into reality. Anyone considering launching a new business is encouraged to attend the “Why Small Businesses Succeed” seminar, which will be held at Best Western Genetti Inn & Suites on Route 309 in Hazle Township from 4 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The seminar will focus on the “3 P’s” of developing a successful new business: Passion, Planning and Persistence. It is the latest in CAN BE’s ongoing “Start Your Own Business” seminar series dedicated to helping area entrepreneurs develop new businesses in Greater Hazleton “New businesses require a number of ingredients in order to succeed, such as a solid business model, accurate financial information and strong sales and marketing program. However, regardless of the nature of the business, it cannot succeed unless there exists a passion for what you are doing, a plan for how the business will thrive and the persistence to soldier on when times get tough,” said CAN BE Executive Director Jack St. Pierre. “Those core ideas are at the heart of this seminar.” A successful entrepreneur in his own right, St. Pierre speaks from experience. He launched his own successful venture in 1986 manufacturing plastic bottles and containers. That business grew from 12 employees when it opened to 85 when he sold the company to Pretium Packaging in 1998. St. Pierre will explain the importance of the “3 P’s” concept with the help of Rob McAnally, president of R. McAnally & Associates, LLC, a global consulting firm based in Mountaintop that specializing in services optimization, planning and programs management. McAnally’s career has spanned more than 30 years guiding companies to enhance their competitive advantage by developing innovative products, streamlining processes and improving operations, while always keeping customer service at the forefront. He is an accredited “Executive Associate” by the Institute for Independent Business, a not-for-profit research and training organization widely regarded as the largest and most prestigious accreditation body in the world for Business Advisors to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s). “It is incredibly important that people starting a new business understand these concepts,” said McAnally. “Time and again throughout my career, I’ve seen people with the best ideas fall short because of their lack of preparation regarding the “3 P’s” concept. The information provided in this seminar will help entrepreneurs take their good ideas and turn it into a good businesses.” The seminar is sponsored in part by PPL and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania. CAN BE – a nonprofit, wholly owned subsidiary of CAN DO, Inc. – operates the area’s business incubator, the Greater Hazleton Business Innovation Center in the Valmont Industrial Park in West Hazleton. According to a report from the National Business Incubation Association, four out of five new businesses fail within the first five years. However, four out of five new businesses started in a business incubator succeed within that same amount of time. The CAN BE incubator program was created to help local entrepreneurs turn their ideas into ventures that will become successful firms able to function on their own and establishing new business and industry for the area. Companies that “graduate” from an incubator program have the potential to create new jobs, commercialize new technologies and strengthen the local economy. CAN BE is funded in part by grants from Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania and PPL Electric Utilities. Penn State Hazleton is an educational partner. Seating for the seminar is limited. Call CAN BE at 570-455-8334 to pre-register for the event.
