WEST HAZLETON - More than 50 area entrepreneurs and new business owners learned valuable information about the importance of sound financial planning and development at a free seminar hosted by the Community Association for New Business Entrepreneurship, or CAN BE – Greater Hazleton’s business incubator program.
The “Financials – What you don’t know can hurt you” seminar was held Thurs., May 31 at Penn State Hazleton. It offered free information from area financial experts on a host of topics ranging from understanding financial statements to identifying funding sources for new businesses.
The seminar was the latest event in CAN BE’s ongoing Start You Own Business Seminar Series.
“Financials is one of the most important and, often, least understood aspects to launching a successful new business. Without understanding the impact financials have, no business can survive, regardless of how groundbreaking the product. That’s why we felt it was a great topic for this seminar,” said CAN BE Executive Director Jack St. Pierre. “The information provided by the speakers will help new business owners and entrepreneurs develop a solid financial foundation to help their business idea turn into a successful venture.”
Topics presented at the event included understanding financial statements; using financial data to make better business decisions; managing finances; correctly pricing your product; and finding capital to launch a new business.
Area financial professionals participating as speakers were Terry Jones, CPA, Jones-Kohanski & Co., LLP; Patricia Gendler, CPA, CAN DO, Inc.; Jack St. Pierre, CAN BE; Gerald Ephault, Ben Franklin Technology Partners; and Robert Maximowicz, NEPA Alliance.
The seminar was sponsored in part by the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Penn State Hazleton and PPL.
CAN BE is a nonprofit, wholly owned subsidiary of CAN DO, Inc., Greater Hazleton’s economic development corporation. CAN BE operates the area’s business incubator, the Greater Hazleton Business and Innovation Center in the Valmont Industrial Park in West Hazleton.
The incubator program helps local entrepreneurs turn their ideas into ventures that will become successful firms able to function on their own and establishing new business and industry for the area. Companies that “graduate” from an incubator program have the potential to create new jobs, commercialize new technologies and strengthen the local economy.
The National Business Incubation Association reports that four out of five new businesses fail within the first five years. However, four out of five new businesses started in a business incubator succeed within that same amount of time.
CAN BE is funded in part by grants from Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania and PPL Electric Utilities. Penn State Hazleton is an educational partner.
