CAN BE seminar to help entrepreneurs make sense out of their dollars May 7, 2007 HAZLETON - One of the most important aspects to successfully launching a new business is a firm understanding of financials and how they can impact your success. Your business’s financial plan dictates everything from how much money is needed to start-up to how to price your product to insure sales and return a profit. CAN BE, the Community Association for New Business Entrepreneurship, is hosting a free seminar that will answer these questions and help entrepreneurs gain an understanding of how different financial data can impact the survival of their business. “Financials – What you don’t know CAN hurt you” will teach new business owners and those thinking of starting a new business how to get their financial house in order and where look for potential funding sources. Anyone considering launching a new business is encouraged to attend the seminar on Thurs., May 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Kostos Building on the campus of Penn State Hazleton. Refreshments will be served. CAN BE Executive Director Jack St. Pierre said that information on finances and has been one of the most requested seminar topics. “Since we held our first seminar last May, one of the most requested topics for future events has been financials,” St. Pierre said. “Regardless of how good a business plan may be, without a sound financial base, no business can survive. This seminar will help build that foundation by providing a lot of information on several different areas of finance.” Topics that will be presented at the seminar include understanding financial statements; managing business finances; correctly pricing your product; and how to find capital to launch a new business. Featured speakers in addition to St. Pierre will be Terry Jones, CPA, Jones-Kohanski & Co., LLP; Patricia Gendler, CPA, CAN DO, Inc.; Gerald Ephault, Ben Franklin Technology Partners; and Robert Maximowicz, NEPA Alliance. The seminar, sponsored in part by PPL, the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Penn State Hazleton, is part of the ongoing CAN BE “Start Your Own Business” seminar series dedicated to helping area entrepreneurs develop new businesses in Greater Hazleton. CAN BE is a nonprofit, wholly owned subsidiary of CAN DO, Inc., which operates the area’s business incubator, the Greater Hazleton Business and Innovation Center in the Valmont Industrial Park in West Hazleton. The incubator program was created to help local entrepreneurs turn their ideas into ventures that will become successful firms able to function on their own and establishing new business and industry for the area. Companies that “graduate” from an incubator program have the potential to create new jobs, commercialize new technologies and strengthen the local economy.
